5 Ways to Beat Festive Travel Exhaustion (Tips from the Pros)

December 21, 2021 General
How To Beat Jet Lag When Travelling This Holiday How To Beat Jet Lag When Travelling This Holiday

Jetting off to visit some fabulous destination (or simply your granny in KZN) these holidays? Lucky you! We’ve all been cooped up for so long that the notion of going somewhere other than home is a complete YAY at the moment. Not that it wasn’t fun before, of course! However, travelling does often come with a side of jet lag, which is not that great.

Fortunately, there are ways to address travel exhaustion to ensure that you arrive at your destination as refreshed as you possibly can. Here are a few insider tips to help you make the most of your journey, and take the right steps to ensure that you are fresh as a daisy (or close to it) upon touchdown:

Know Your Needs & Cater for It

Every one of us has different comfort requirements. This is why Bed King has developed the Comfort Solutions Lab to provide our clientele with tailor-made mattress-buying advice, for instance. So when you prepare for a flight, take stock of what you will need to be as comfortable as possible so you can get some shuteye in transit.

After all, when we get on a plane with kids in tow, we spend quite a bit of time packing them snacks, entertainment options and the little bits and bobs they need to feel comfy (their favourite blanket, a sleepy-time toy etc.). So treat yourself in the same way - pack some comfy socks, a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs - whatever you need to zone out and get some zzz’s.

Don’t Skimp on Hydration

We know, we know - it’s a mission to go to the loo on a flight. All the ‘excuse me, excuse me’ shuffles down the row, and then perhaps wait at the cubicle. However, don’t let this deter you from pounding plenty of water and herbal teas on your flight. Staying well-hydrated when you fly is one of the easiest ways to lessen the impact of jet lag. In this case, the short-term hassle will be worth your while for sure.

TOP TIP: Rather steer clear of alcohol, sodas, coffee and other caffeinated drinks on a plane - it will dehydrate you and interfere with any sleep you may have been able to get en route.

Adjust for Time

If you are going quite far away and will be operating in a different time zone for quite a while, it works to prepare your body for it. This app, developed by university professors in Michigan, connects users to lighting schedules that have been mathematically proven to adjust your body to a new time zone as quickly as possible by recording your lighting history and using it as a primary driving input to 'hack' your circadian rhythm. How amazing?
