Breakfast in Bed in an IKEA Store? | Bed King Blog

Would You Do Breakfast in Bed in a Retail Store?

Breakfast in bed is loved by many people around the world, but in the UK furniture retailer IKEA has decided to introduce it into their pop-up “café” in London. In fact, they are bringing naptime to the bed and mattress retail floor with a Swedish breakfast for anybody that is prepared to test out any of their beds. But the question is, would something like this be popular (or even allowed) in South Africa? To answer this crazy question let’s take a look at exactly what it is the folks at Ikea in the UK are offering their customers…

Book a Bed and Enjoy a Bite to Eat or Even a Siesta

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Swedish retailer is preparing to serve typical Swedish breakfasts to people who book a bed for a 45-minute slot between 7 a.m. and noon. Here they will be able to relax in either a single or double bed where they will be served by specially trained waiting staff and advised by instore sleep specialists. Then from noon to 3 p.m., the beds will again be available for bookings so that afternoon siestas can be taken. IKEA has even gone so far as to state that potential customers can order from a “pillow menu” which is “designed to match the pillow they have in their home.”

Is this Something New for IKEA?

Funny enough no it is not, in fact Ikea is well-known for its relaxed attitude when it comes to letting customers sit, or even sleep, on its furniture. It has even become so popular in places like Beijing that recently they had to ban customers at a store from sleeping in the beds, after the number of people doing so got out of hand.

But the Question is, Would This Work in SA?

Although we at Bed King encourage our customers to “test out” the beds to see if they suit their needs, South African’s are in our opinion simply not happy to lie down and sleep just anywhere. We are a nation who enjoys privacy, especially when it comes to the bedroom. Not only that, but our health and safety legislation are some of the best in the world and would not allow a company to simply offer what amounts to a B&B or Hospitality Mattress service to the man on a the street in a retail outlet.
