What Colour Should You Paint Your Bedroom?

May 05, 2020

How to choose a paint colour for your bedroom

Time to paint your room? Exciting! There is nothing like a lick of paint to bring a fresh new ambience to a room. Best of all? It’s totally cost-effective and unlike expensive home improvements that require construction it doesn’t take ages to complete this kind of project. All you need are some brushes, a roller or two, a ladder, some healthy shoulder muscles and your paint of choice. Which brings us to the question du jour - how to choose a paint colour for your bedroom.

Here are a few insider tips from the Bed King crew on choosing bedroom paint colours:

Keep Colour Psychology in Mind

Different colours evoke different vibes, and the effect differs slightly from one person to the next. However, there are certain rules of thumb that apply for pretty much everyone. E.g. blue is calming and good for clarity and communication; purple is rich, dramatic and sophisticated; pink is soft, soothing and feminine (depending on the hue of course!); red is bold, daring and stimulating; orange is fun, whimsical and good-natured; while yellow is joyful, friendly and optimistic. As such, it's easy to see why most interior decorators recommend a colour from the cooler end of the spectrum for a bedroom - these colours are more likely to introduce a feeling of calm and relaxation that is optimal for restful sleep.

Go Beyond the Paint Swatch

Paint swatches are all good and well, but if you really want to get a feel for how a colour would look when it’s all over your walls, you’re going to need to put a few strokes up on the wall itself. It’s also good to do a test to see whether a colour goes darker when you apply two or more layers. I.e. if you’re trying to decide between a few different hues, get yourself a small tin of each colour and get painting. Then give yourself a few days to consider your options before you take the plunge.

When In Doubt, Colourblock

If you’re feeling unsure about painting your whole room a solid colour, don’t fret - there are other options. You could, for instance, choose to colour block by painting one or two walls (or even the ceiling for a change of pace!). Alternatively, you could also choose to use a stencil to apply colour in different patterns on your wall, or perhaps you want to go the wallpaper route? There are so many fun options available.

There you have it - three top tips to help you choose the perfect paint colour for your bedroom. These guidelines will allow you to weigh your options carefully before you take the plunge and pull out the paint rollers.
