Tick Off Your 2020 Goals By Getting More Sleep

January 07, 2020

Stick to your 2020 resolutions - get more sleep!

As we head into the new year, most of us tend to make a few resolutions or at least set a few goals for ourselves. However, whether it can often be easier said than done to stick to those plans of losing a few kilograms, learning a new language, exercising more regularly, taking an online course or making more sustainable dietary choices. So, what’s a well-intentioned human to do to pave the way for goal-smashing success in 2020?

Well, it turns out it will help a lot if you start by getting enough high-quality sleep every night. According to recent findings by the University of Michigan Health System, sleep plays a major role in our ability to stick to long-term goals. Here are resolutions you’ll be able to stick to a whole lot better if you get adequate zzz’s while doing so:

Eating Better

When you don't get proper rest, your body produces less leptin (the hormone that facilitates the 'full' signal) and more ghrelin. This is a poor combination for someone who's trying to eat well. Additionally, when you're awake late at night it can also lead to mindless snacking.

Exercising More Regularly

If you don't feel rested, odds are very slim that you're going to be up for a nice sweat session at the gym or lacing up those takkies to go for a run. It goes beyond mental motivation however - your speed, strength and endurance are much higher when you've had enough rest.

Earning A Promotion

Feeling groggy at the office due to a lack of sufficient rest will definitely hamper your ability to be your best work self. When you're well-rested, you are far more likely to be alert, motivated and cheerful, which is a surefire way to draw the right kind of managerial attention.

Improving Your Relationship

This one is pretty obvious - tired people are grumpy people. When you're not resting well at night, odds are your fuse is going to a lot shorter that it could be, which is not the best way to smooth the way to happier relations with your significant other. There is a reason the old adage suggests that we 'sleep on things' before making big decisions. It helps to have a clear head and well-rested body when you're trying to be a better partner.

There you have it - a few important reasons to ensure that you get sufficient sleep if you want to stick to your personal goals for 2020. Keep an eye on the blog in the coming weeks and months for more interesting info on the science of sleep.
