The Bed of Ware

August 31, 2012

The Bed of Ware

Did you know that one of the biggest beds ever made was built in 1580 and can still be seen today in the Ware Museum in England? Its exact measurements are rather intimidating with a width of 3.26 metres (10.7 ft) and a length of 3.38 metres (11.1 ft).

The bed itself was so famous when first built that it was even mentioned by William Shakespeare in his play the Twelfth Night. In the play Shakespeare has Sir Toby Belch describe a sheet of paper as being "big enough for the Bed of Ware".

There were also a number of other literary references of the bed made by Ben Jonson in his 1609 play The Silent Woman and by George Farquhar's in his 1706 play The Recruiting Officer. There latest literary reference to the bed was made by George Gordon Byron in Don Juan.
