How To Stop Allergies from Messing Up Your Sleep

July 30, 2019

Top tips to keep allergies from impacting on your sleep

If you suffer from serious allergies you’ll know how debilitating conditions like asthma and allergic rhinitis can be. People who don’t carry this particular health burden are quick to dismiss it as a slight irritation, but if you’re one of the millions of seasonal allergy sufferers who actively dread the changing of the seasons, you’ll know that it actually has the potential to wreak havoc with everything from your ability to sleep, to your daytime productivity levels and more.

The fact that allergies can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to fall and remain asleep is not just anecdotal either - it’s backed up by science. This is because histamine, an organic nitrogenous compound involved in local immune responses, keeps your body alert to fight allergens, which also leads to tossing and turning at night.

So, what can you do to lessen the impact of allergies when you turn in for the night? Well, aside from discussing the matter with your physician and taking the medication they prescribe to keep your condition in check, there are a few environmental tweaks you can make as well. These include:

  • Removing daytime clothing and shoes outside of your bedroom and keeping any heavy outer garments (jackets, coats, etc.) in a separate room.

  • Using an air purifier in your sleeping space.

  • Covering your mattress with a cover to protect against environmental allergens like dust mites.

  • Showering and dressing in clean pyjamas before bed to reduce the allergens you carry into bed with you.

  • Checking that your evening medication does not contain anything that will keep you alert (e.g. pseudoephedrine in certain decongestants).

  • Clearing your sinuses with a saline spray to reduce mucus and congestion.

Following these guidelines will pave the way for restful sleep, despite any allergies you may have. If you’re in the process of rethinking your sleeping space, you may also want to consider your mattress. Why not visit a Bed King branch in person to take advantage of our revolutionary Comfort Solutions Lab®?
