A Surprise Factor That Can Affect Your Sleep

November 06, 2018

Why quitting smoking will improve your sleep.

At Bed King, our focus has always been on providing South Africans with all the makings of a good night’s rest, which is why we are one of the country’s foremost suppliers of beds and mattresses. However, there is more to a good night’s rest than a suitable sleeping surface. Your lifestyle choices can make a big impact on how well you sleep at night.

Case in point - smoking. By now, we all realise that smoking is not good for us. Whether you partake of the occasional cigar or regularly smoke cigarettes, the health risks are too great to ignore. Fortunately, worldwide statistics are showing that a far greater percentage of the population now chooses to live smoke-free, but there are still those individuals who are insufficiently educated regarding the risks of smoking, or simply battle to kick the habit.

Did you know that smoking has a serious impact on the quality of your sleep? Nicotine, the active ingredient in most combustible smoking materials, acts as a stimulant, which inhibits sleep. But that’s just the start of it. Here are a few more ways in which smoking can affect the quality of your sleep:

  • Nicotine increases your heart rate and level of alertness, which keeps sleep at bay.
  • If you are addicted to nicotine, your brain might wake you up at night for another dose, thereby disrupting your sleep pattern.
  • The resultant sleep deprivation can impact on your ability to focus, as well as your mood, which may cause certain smokers to smoke even more to stay alert during the day.
  • It can disrupt your circadian clock and alter your sleep architecture (i.e. the amount of time you spend in each sleep stage, namely light sleep, deep sleep and REM).
  • It can cause snoring and or obstructive sleep apnea.

These are just a few of the ways in which smoking impacts on the quality of your sleep. In short - the time to quit is now. While you’re in the process of adapting your lifestyle to ensure that you enjoy restorative rest, you may you may want to consider investing in an upgrade of your current sleeping surface. Our mattresses and bedding play a very important role in the quality of rest we enjoy, so it may be time to reassess your current setup.
