Sleepy SA Employees Affect Turnover - Are You One?

Sleep-deprived employees cost SA businesses money

When you’re at the top of your corporate game, sleep can seem like something that’s holding you back - after all, the more time you spend grafting, the more valuable you are to your company, right? Not so, according to a dissertation by local MBA scholar Charles King, whose recent study found that sleep-deprived South Africans are costing our economy billions every year. 

Here are a few ways in which a failure to prioritise adequate rest can end up costing your employer, and the country in general, quite a few ZAR: 

It Makes You Sick

According to the study, which used LifeQ-enabled Garmin Vivosmart HR devices to track the sleeping behaviours and habits of 658 employees (men and women aged 25 to 40), individuals who consistently got less than 6 hours of sleep per night are at higher risk to develop depression, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes and even certain types of cancer. 

It Impairs Your Reasoning

King's study included several alarming findings, including that one night of fewer than six hours' sleep, is equivalent to two totally sleepless nights in its impact on cognitive performance, making risky decision-making more likely.

You Could Cause Accidents 

Sleep deprivation can slow reaction times, which is a big problem if you work in an industry that depends on you to operate heavy machinery, etc. Accidents in the workplace is a major drain on company finances - all the more reason to get a good night’s rest so you are able to perform at your best while you’re on the clock. 

You’re Not As Productive As You Think

You may think that you’re at the top of your game when you’re fuelled up on caffeine, burning the midnight oil, but in reality, our memory and concentration are severely affected when we don’t get adequate sleep. You are far better off taking the time to get sufficient sleep and arriving at work refreshed.
