Changing your sleep position could improve your sleep

By now, we all know that there are certain things that play a major role in how well we are able to sleep at night. Steering clear of stimulants like alcohol and caffeine before bedtime, banishing screens from the bedroom, sticking to a relaxing wind-down ritual before going to sleep - these are all great habits that lay the foundation for a solid night’s rest. But did you know that the way you choose to lie in bed when going to sleep can also play a role?

Sleeping positions are a very personal thing. Some people don’t have a hope of falling asleep if they aren’t flat on their backs, while others swear by a comforting fetal position, or prefer to sleep on their stomachs with their limbs thrown wide in a ‘this bed is all mine’ starfish position. Chances are you are so used to your go-to position by now that you’ve never even thought about trying another one. However, if you battle to fall and remain asleep at night, a change like this might be the answer you’ve been looking for.

Here are a few pros and cons of the most common sleeping positions:

Sleeping On Your Back

Pros: Healthy for your back and spine (neutral position); leads to fewer facial wrinkles.
Cons: Enhances sleep apnea and snoring, can obstruct breathing.

Sleeping On Your Side

Pros: Sleeping on the left side is good for individuals who suffer from acid reflux and heartburn because it places the stomach in a position that aids lymph drainage and improves circulation.
Cons: Side sleeping can place pressure on the stomach, lungs, and appendages such as the bottom arm and shoulder.

Sleeping On Your Stomach

Pros: It eases snoring.
Cons: Flattens the natural curve of the spine, leading to lower back pain; places strain on the neck.
