Royal Bed Discovered in the Bin

While every bed at the Bed King is fit for a king, debate is raging across the world about a recently discovered bed that is thought to have once belonged to Henry VII.

The bed was discovered dismantled and discarded in a car park and sold to an auctioneer. While the bed initially fetched £2,200 on auction, if it is genuine the bed could be worth £20 million. Tests have been conducted on wood chips that have been taken from beneath the 19th varnish and suggests that the wood was cut from a forest in Germany in the 1480s. Researchers suggest that there is a possibility that the bed was constructed by Henry VII to celebrate his marriage to the daughter of King Edward VI’s daughter Elizabeth of York after his victory in the War of the Roses.

If it is genuine the bed, called the Paradise State Bed, is the only bed to survive from the Tudor palace of Westminster and could be the bed in which Henry VIII was conceived. King Henry VIII is possibly one of England’s most famous kings thanks to his six marriages and his role in the  separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church.

At the moment the bed is on show at Auckland Castle near Darlington, Durham.
