The Head’s Up on our Headboards

April 12, 2016

Dating all the way back to ancient Egypt, the headboard was originally designed to regulate temperatures by creating airflow between the bed and the wall in the summer and preventing against cold and draughts in the winter. Seen as a status symbol, only wealthier families had the luxury of headboards and the more ornate the headboard the higher placed the family.

It was the ancient Greeks who really set the ball rolling in terms of headboard design, and as the design and creativity improved so too did comfort levels. Over the centuries the headboard has evolved further and further to become an integral design and décor item in the bedroom. While they remain practical functional items, they have also become decorative and creative elements for the bedroom.

The headboard is quite literally the board at the head of the bed. It sits between the bed and the wall. It has several purposes. First of all it frames the bed in the room, just as mantle piece frames a fireplace. It also offers a chance to add some colour, texture and a little design flair to a bedroom.

The wonderful thing about headboards is that there is no hard and fast rule as to what they should look like – any shape, size, colour, texture and pattern. This really is an opportunity to create your own vision.

At Bed King we have a selection of headboards to suit every taste and budget.
