 Help your child to get better grades by enforcing bedtime

The new school year is in full swing, and the first of this year’s multiple test seasons is almost upon us. If you have been wondering how you can help your child to improve their grades this year, it might be as simple as ensuring that they get sufficient rest at night. 

How More Sleep Improves Your Child’s Potential to Achieve Better Grades

A child’s growing brain requires between 8 and 12 hours of sleep every day to function optimally, depending on their age. When children get this recommended amount of sleep, the following occurs: 

  1. Their bodies can regulate the neurohormones leptin and ghrelin, as well as cardiovascular function and glucose levels. 

  2. Decision-making and attention levels improve. 

  3. Memory retention and overall academic potential improve.

Tips to Help Your Child Sleep Better

Helping your child to get better rest at night can be a challenge, especially if you’re dealing with older children and teenagers. Here are a few tips to lay the groundwork for better rest for the whole family: 

  • Don’t eat dinner too late. If you wait until 20:00 or 21:00 to serve dinner your child’s body will still be digesting when they go to bed. Ideally, you want to serve dinner no later than 19:00, or earlier if possible. Also, try to keep dinners on the lighter end of the spectrum - e.g. a tuna salad rather than steak and fries. 

  • Discourage any form of screen time an hour or two before bed. This includes TV, cell phones, tablets, and even E-readers. The blue light emitted by these devices interferes with the body’s natural circadian rhythm, leading to interrupted sleep and even insomnia.  

  • Be strict about bedtimes. Children of school-going age should ideally be in bed by 20:00 so they can get the recommended 8 - 10 hours of sleep per night. Adapt your family’s evening routine to allow for this. In fact, the grownups can go to bed at this time as well (it’s the best time to sleep!).
