Mattress Maintenance: Get the most out of your mattress

Your mattress should be looked after: not only is it a valuable investment, but you spend almost a third of your life on it!

When it comes to protection, often prevention is the best option. If you have children, run a guesthouse, or like breakfast in bed, a mattress protector is essential! A mattress protector will prevent liquid damage, while also help prevent bed bugs, dust mites, allergies and hygiene. They will preserve your mattress and prevent damage from stains or soiling. Not only is this great news for your mattress, but it will also help with your mattresses’ warranty. ou should also vacuum your mattress regularly as well as air it out.

If you don’t have a mattress protector and you do spill something on your mattress, you can use a mild detergent to get it out, but avoid putting too much water on it. Once you have removed the dirt, make sure that your mattress is completely dry before you put it away. If you want to get rid of odours you can use baking soda to absorb the smell.

But protecting your mattress doesn’t stop at prevention. While some newer mattresses have are ‘no-flip’, some older mattresses will need to be flipped or rotated occasionally to ensure a long life span. By flipping or rotating the mattresses the fabrics and foam layers within it will reconstitute and return to their original shape. Failure to rotate your mattress could result in damage and depressions being created in your mattress which will void your warranty.

While many people choose their mattresses and bases separately, this can cause damage from ill-fitting combinations. If the base does not provide sufficient support for your mattress, ie it is on slats or is old, it can cause the mattress to sag and lead to back problems or other sleep troubles. Ideally you should buy your bed and mattress at the same time so that you can be sure that they fit perfectly and that they will wear at the same rate.
