How to Wake Up Like a Pro

Winning morning routines for notorious snoozers

Benjamin Franklin famously said "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise", but he clearly did not have an issue to get up and seize the day like many of us do. In fact, all that seizing can be a tall order if you do the battle of the snooze button with your phone every morning. So, what is a notorious snoozer to do if they want to take control of their morning routine in order to grow into a carpe diem winner?

Here are a few tips to revitalise your morning routine and pave the way for daylong success:

Make Sure You Sleep Enough

If you want to get up right, you need to start by sleeping right, and that means getting at least 7 to 8 hours of quality rest per night if you’re a full-grown human. Here are a few ways to ensure that this happens:

  • Go to bed at the same time each night.

  • Avoid caffeine at least 4 hours before bedtime.

  • Eat a light meal for dinner so your body doesn’t have to do heavy digesting while you’re trying to unwind.

  • Avoid screens (TV, cell phones, tablets, etc.) at least one hour before bedtime - the blue-spectrum light stimulates your brain and keeps it awake.

  • Sleep in loose, comfortable clothing.

  • Invest in a high-quality mattress and bedding that conform to your comfort requirements.

Get Up Like the Pros Do

You know those super irritating morning people who get more done by 8 am than many of us manage to do in a whole day? It turns out they have a few morning routines in common. This includes:

  • Getting up once - no snoozing, no repeat alarms. The alarm goes off, they get up and get out of bed. They also get up at the same time every morning.

  • Taking time to ease into the day. Some choose to journal or meditate, others lace up their trainers and go for a run/walk, while others do Pilates or yoga.

  • They know exactly how their mornings will go because they plot it out the evening before - school lunches are packed, training gear is laid out, etc.

There you have it - a few top tips to help you take control of your morning routine. Start by implementing one of these strategies per week, and see what a huge difference it makes. Keep an eye on the blog in the coming weeks and months for more helpful advice on getting plenty of restorative rest.
