How To Use Essential Oils To Sleep Better

If you’ve ever had a hard time falling asleep at night, you’ll know that sleeplessness has the potential to derail the productive part of your day pretty badly. However, not everyone wants to jump to the drastic option of using prescription pharmaceuticals to help them sleep straight off the bat. Fortunately, there are plenty of other avenues to explore before heading to the doctor - essential oils and aromatherapy for instance. 

Essential Oils That Can Promote Sleep

  • Lavender oil - a soothing scent that has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve depression. 

  • Vanilla oil - a warm, inviting scent that has can reduce hyperactivity and restlessness, and quiet the nervous system. 

  • Rose geranium oil - a lovely herbaceous floral scent that is calming and has been used in aromatherapy for centuries. 

How To Use Essential Oils

Here are a few ways in which you can incorporate essential oils in your bedtime routine to aid restorative rest: 

  1. Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath, about an hour to 90 minutes before bedtime. 

  2. Use a diffuser to disperse the oil in the air in your bedroom. 

  3. Make a mist by combining 4-5 drops of your chosen oil and half a cup of water in an atomiser or spray bottle (this is great if you prefer to spray the oils onto your clothing or linens). 

  4. Combine with a carrier oil and use it in light self-massage. 

VERY IMPORTANT: Essential oils are very concentrated. Never ingest the oils or put it onto your skin directly without diluting it with a carrier oil (e.g. sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, etc.). Although it will not cause a reaction in every case, it does have the potential to cause skin irritations and other unwanted reactions. Pregnant women should also consult with their healthcare provider before using essential oils.
