How to get enough sleep even when you’re extremely busy

Tips on getting enough sleep when you’re very busy

We live in a fast-paced age that calls for unwavering time-management skills. This is true for everyone from dedicated home-makers, corporate heavyweights and hard-working students, to professional athletes, world travellers and all the folks in between. Although we all know that we have to keep healthy if we want to reach our goals, sleep is often one of the first things that fall by the wayside when we are pushing to meet tight deadlines, often to the detriment of our cognitive functioning and overall well being.

If you battle to reconcile tight deadlines with sufficient sleep, it may be time to reconsider the way you organise your life. Here are a few top tips to get you started on the right path:

Manage Expectations From The Start

Manage your schedule according to your abilities. It can be hard to say no when a great opportunity presents itself on top of all your everyday responsibilities, but be honest with yourself - do you have the time and capacity to do a good job? Will you have to burn the midnight oil to get it done? Be real with yourself and don’t overload your plate to the point where you have to carve out working time from what is supposed to be nighttime rest.

Prioritise Your Tasks & Avoid Procrastination

Make a working schedule and stick to it. If you are a morning person you may find that you can get a lot done in two hours before everyone else wakes up or heads into the office. Alternatively, you may find that you are at your most productive in the afternoon or evening hours. Play to your strengths and organise your day accordingly. Then (most importantly!) stick to your schedule and resist the temptation to procrastinate.

Practice Sleep Hygiene

To ensure that you sleep well when you go to bed, it pays to practice sleep hygiene. Try to go to bed at the same time each day so your body clock can adapt, avoid screens for an hour before bedtime, make sure your pajamas, mattress and bedding conform to your comfort requirements and keep your bedroom cool and dark. These measures will improve your ability to fall and remain asleep by a lot.

Leverage Naps When Necessary

If you do end up eating into your nighttime sleeping hours despite your best efforts, try to work in a quick, refreshing nap somewhere in the afternoon. A 30-minute snooze can do wonders when your energy starts to ebb.

Following these guidelines will pave the way for a manageable schedule that will allow you to get sufficient rest and remain healthy while you chase your personal and professional goals.
