How Probiotics Can Help You to Sleep Better

March 25, 2020

Can probiotics be used as a natural sleep aid?

If  you're into healthy stuff, chances are you've been hearing quite a bit about probiotics recently. It’s quite the buzzword these days, and TBH those tend to come and go. Happily, the probiotic movement is much more than a fad, and it’s been established that gut-healthy foods and supplements also have the potential to lay the groundwork for better sleep! Here’s how.

HOW PROBIOTICS WORK AS A NATURAL SLEEP AID

There are a lot of natural chemicals involved in the process of kicking off and maintaining restorative sleep, and each needs to chime in at exactly the right time in exactly the right quantities. Many of these very important chemicals have a supply chain that starts in your gut. In fact, one of the most important (and often overlooked) jobs the gut has is to produce neurotransmitters! To work properly, your gut needs its intestinal flora to be happy, and to be happy, these guys need probiotics.

Here are three things you need to sleep well that are produced or controlled in your gut, if and when your gut is functioning optimally due to the presence of a happy intestinal biome:

  • Serotonin. Aside from keeping you shiny and happy, serotonin also plays an important role in the transition to REM sleep, the fifth stage necessary for restorative sleep.

  • Cortisol. Probiotics help to keep cortisol (the stress hormone) levels in check, which is critical for slow-wave sleep.

  • GABA. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) calms nerve activity so your brain and body relax enough to fall asleep.

See, how amazing are probiotics? Wondering how you can work some into your dietary line-up? Well, you can either take a capsule or drink a daily dose of a probiotic fluid; or you can simply add fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, tempeh, kimchi, miso or kombucha to your condiment and refreshment rotation. It’s really as simple as that. Best of all? A happy gut has so many other benefits as well! You can look forward to clear skin, a stronger immune system, improved mood, effective digestion and more!
