How CBD Could Improve Sleeplessness

March 31, 2020

Can CBD help me to sleep better?

So, here’s an interesting topic! While there are still many folks out there who believe that cannabis/marijuana/good old dagga is wildly dangerous and not to be trifled with, the Constitutional Court of South Africa ruled the use and cultivation of marijuana for personal use legal in September 2018.

As such, the use of CBD oil to treat common health issues, including anxiety, depression, acne and heart disease, as well as chronic pain, has become a lot more widespread and socially acceptable. Some people are even using it to sleep better at night. So, today we’ll be taking a look at CBD, and why it could potentially have a positive effect on a person’s ability to fall and remain asleep at night.

What Exactly is CBD?

Cannabidiol commonly referred to as CBD, is one of over 100 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

Does CBD Get You High?

No. The Cannabis Sativa plant has two known components: cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While THC is psychoactive (i.e. it gives the user a 'high'), CBD is not.

How Does CBD Impact on Sleep?

There are many variables that play a role in how well someone sleeps. Anxiety and pain are two factors that can be mitigated with the use of CBD oil:

  • Anxiety. Research suggests that CBD oil can help treat anxiety, which contributes to sleeplessness. This study showed that 79.2% of all the participants said that CBD resulted in lower levels of anxiety and 66.7% of all the participants said that CBD gave them a better sleep experience.

  • Pain. A study conducted by Frontiers in Pharmacology reported that CBD helps decrease pain, which ultimately reduces the discomfort felt when sleeping.

There you have it - a concise explanation of how CBD can improve sleeplessness and pave the way for restorative rest.
