Having Trouble Telling Friends from Frenemies? Get More Sleep!

Having difficulty reading people’s expressions? Having difficulty trusting people around the office?  It turns out that this could be because you are suffering from a lack of sleep. New research from University of California Berkeley published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that a lack of sleep affects the way that you read situations and encounters.

The ability to read and correctly interpret facial expressions is essential for everyday experiences since as much as people try to hide their intentions, facial expressions still gives away intentions. Being able to read these expressions correctly not only helps to you understand what people are going through and empathize with them, but also to pick up on subtle warnings and threats. Without being able to respond to other’s facial social expressions can significantly damage your interpersonal relationships with friends, loved ones and co-workers.

The research conducted by scientists at UC Berkeley has shown that if you are sleep deprived you are less likely to be to read, interpret and respond to these cues correctly, and more likely to read them as more threatening and dangerous - increasing the lack of trust and paranoia in everyday life.

This research is pivotal for people who work long hours in customer facing roles, students who study all night, as well as for emergency service professionals such as police and hospital staff. The inability to correctly interpret these facial expressions and instead read them as being more threatening can lead to increased workplace incidents.

This research could suggest that this is the reason why people who are overworked or getting too little sleep are less likely to highly sociable. But it is not the end of the world. The study also suggests that even as little as a single decent night's sleep is enough to get your mind back on  track when it comes to reading facial expressions and back to a better office space and happier social interactions.

And the best way to get the perfect night’s sleep? On a great Bed King Bed of course!
