The Importance of a Good Mattress for Growing Kids

August 10, 2017

Choosing the right mattress for your child

As adults, we know that the difference between sleeping on a good quality, supportive and comfortable mattress and one that is lumpy, unsupportive and uncomfortable is the difference between a good day and a bad day. Our quality of sleep determines how we function in the world. But, for children who are still growing and forming, sleeping on the wrong mattress can have far more serious effects than just a bad day because of a bad night’s sleep.

That being said, choosing a mattress for your child is about so much more than just a good night’s sleep. Children lead very busy lives today - even young kids are constantly on the go, whether it is at school, sport or play. Children are constantly learning, absorbing and taking things in – they are like sponges. This can be tiring work for little brains. A good night’s sleep provides the perfect conditions for all this information to amalgamate and consolidate, like a computer downloading new or updated software. A good mattress provides the kind of quality sleep that is needed to recharge, grow, and allow their bodies to recover and rejuvenate from constantly being on the go.

The right mattress does not only provide the ideal conditions for great quality sleep so that they can rest, as children grow they need support for their changing bodies. A supportive mattress is essential. Providing the right level of support and spinal alignment ensures that there is no added pressure or stress on their skeletal frames so that their bodies grow and develop correctly. A comfortable and supportive mattress also means that your child is more likely to have a good night of the best quality sleep without tossing and turning and waking up constantly, which also means you will have a good night’s sleep too.

Another factor to consider when choosing a mattress for your child includes whether or not it is hypoallergenic if your child suffers from allergies – coughing and sneezing all night does not result in a good night’s sleep.  You might also want to consider a mattress cover as an essential accessory as not only will it extend the life of your child’s mattress, it will also protect the mattress from dirt, wear and tear. And, if you have young kids, you might want to consider a waterproof mattress cover just in case of accidents during the night.

As much as food and water are vital for a happy healthy child, so too is sleep. So, when it comes to choosing a mattress for your child don’t make the mistake of thinking that because they’re young they don’t need a good quality mattress. Think of a mattress as an investment in your child’s well being. Browse our selection of beds for kids or speak to a sleep expert for the best advice.
