Equal societies = better sleep. Here's why!

Equalised household responsibilities = better sleep!

Ladies take care of the kids, gents bring home the bacon. Right? That’s the way the world is structured, but this statement has not been completely true for decades. While there are some families for whom this is still the case, there are fewer and fewer couples who can afford to balance their household finances on a single income. As such, many women return to the workplace after having children, or start working from home if they have the good fortune to be able to do so.

However, this change is not always reflected in the night-time division of labour in a home with small children and pressing work schedules. According to the findings of a new study regarding gender equality and restless sleep among partnered Europeans, it was found that men are most likely to suffer from disrupted sleep due to concerns regarding workplaces stressors or family finances, while women were more likely to do so because their familial responsibilities (waking up for younger children, waiting up for older kids, etc.) continued into the night.

The same study found that couples who lived in countries with more gender-equal societies reported better sleep on the whole, largely due to the fact that there was a more equal division of childcare responsibilities, as well as breadwinner status. In settings like these, couples were more likely to shoulder an equal portion of the burden when it came to taking care of both their offspring and the finances and, as such, had an equal right to a good night’s sleep. It seems that once this precedent was established, it paved the way for more restful slumber on the whole, since couples work together to facilitate a tranquil bedtime environment, rather resenting each other or staking a claim.

So, there you have it - creating balance in the division of your household responsibilities could very well improve your sleep. While you’re in the process of creating a sleep-friendly environment at home, you may want to consider investing in an upgrade of your current sleeping surface. Your mattress and bedding play a tremendously important role in the quality of rest you enjoy, so it’s worth your while to reconsider your needs as they evolve.
