Excessive Sleepiness May Cause Learning Problems

April 24, 2012

Excessive Sleepiness May Cause Learning Problems

In America a new sleep study has been done at the Penn State University in which researchers followed 508 children divided into 2 groups, one in which children experienced excessive daytime sleepiness and one in which the children were alert during daytime hours. The report states that parents of the children in the group that reported excessive daytime sleepiness also reported more cases of learning, attention/hyperactivity and conduct problems.

What surprised the researchers at Penn State was that the tired students got just as much sleep as the other children in confirmed results. Researchers have suggested that the sleepiness can be linked to obesity or symptoms of depression and anxiety and that parents and educators should take note of these sleepiness patterns as the learning and behavior problems could have consequences later in the child’s life.

The study appeared in the May 2012 issue of the American Academy of Sleep journal SLEEP.

Please Note! If you have concerns about your child’s sleeping patterns please contact an accredited medical practitioner in your area.
