Debunking the Myths About Bunk Beds

Bunk beds are one of the most practical methods to save both money and space in your children’s bedroom. Not only are they versatile, but they are often an exciting sleep solution for children as they create imaginative forts or pirate galleys to play on.

Unfortunately there are many myths about the dangers and difficulties of bunk beds. We put the most common of these to bed:

Myth #1: Making the bed is impossible

Reality: Changing the top bunk’s bedding can be harder than changing the lower one, but it is by no means impossible. If you are unable to climb the ladder to the top bunk and have enough space to maneuver on the top bunk, there is a good chance that the roof in the room is too low to accommodate a bunk bed. Bunk beds require sufficient space above the top bunk so that children don’t hurt themselves when sitting up at night.

Some parents take this opportunity to either use multiple sheets for easy removal or encourage their children to take responsibility for their own bedding. Working with your child to change the bedding can be a great step to getting them to do it themselves.

Myth #2: Bunk beds are only worth it if you have two kids

Reality: While two children sharing a bunk bed is a great way for them to bond, getting a bunk bed for a single child is also a great idea. Not only does it mean that you always have a spare bed for sleepovers or for when family visits, but many bunk beds have the option for additional storage or study area underneath the the top bunk saving space in your child’s room.

Myth #3: Bunk beds are great for little children

Reality: You should only let children over the age of six sleep on the top bunk. You should also ensure that they are rails on the side of the bunk bed to ensure that they don’t accidentally roll over in the middle of the night. It is a good idea to ensure that there is a night light or a light switch easily available for the sleeper on the top bunk should they want to climb down the ladder in the middle of the night.

Myth #4: Safety rails can be removed when your child is old enough

Reality: Bunk beds should always have safety rails no matter how old the sleeper is. Even if the sleeper is a sound sleeper who is never prone to a restless night’s sleep, the rails should be kept just in case. Ensure that your bunk bed has guardrails on both sides even if it up against a wall

Myth #5: Bunk beds are dangerous for young children

Reality: Strangely research has found that the most common age for people to hurt themselves on a bunk bed are between the ages of eighteen and twenty one. This can be because of their popularity in colleges or universities and military bases.

Myth #6: Bunk beds can collapse in the middle of the night

Reality:  Bunk beds are built to withstand the added rigours of children climbing up and down them. Parents should warn their children not to jump on the top bunk, but even so the top bunk is sturdy and designed to be safe even if children disregard the warnings.
