Choosing Single Beds for Student Rooms - A How-To

May 19, 2020

Choosing the perfect bed for a student bedroom

Ah, those student years. Footloose and fancy-free, right? Well, mostly. There’s also a fair amount of stress, studying and Maggie 2-minute noodles involved TBH. If you, or your child (they grow up so fast!), are headed for the greener pastures of a tertiary education institute, one thing is for sure - you need to sort out a proper bed, ASAP.

Why so? Well, a rested brain is a healthy brain, and you need one of those if you want to stay ahead with your studies. Here are a few things to bear in mind when you shop for a bed for a student room:

  • Remember student rooms are on the smaller side. Opt for a bed that makes the most of the space available. Sleeper couches, bunk beds and trundle beds are all great options when it comes to saving on space.

  • Invest in a mattress that conforms to your comfort level. We all have different needs when it comes to our mattresses - some folks sleep better on a very firm surface, while others get the best ZZZ’s on a plush surface with a little more give. Not sure what type works best for you? Visit Bed King in-store to try out our Comfort Solutions Lab®, which uses proprietary pressure-point mapping technology to determine which mattresses would suit you best.

  • Don’t skimp on bedding. High-quality bedding lasts longer and breathes well, wicking sweat away from your skin while you sleep.

Now that you know what you should be looking for while you shop around for a bed for a student room, here are a few additional tips to improve room layout and decor for optimal sleep:

  • Invest in block-out curtains or very dark curtains. Students often study late into the night, and need to catch up on shuteye during the day. Although this is not ideal (our bodies are more likely to go into REM at night, when our core temperatures are lower), it’s best to plan for such occasions. As such, investing in block-out curtains is always a good idea.

  • Treat yourself to a high-powered fan. If you live in a warm-climate country like South Africa, a standing fan or ceiling fan can be a lifesaver when temperatures soar in summertime. We sleep best when our bodies are cool, after all.

  • Place your charging station and devices away from your bedside. If your phone is charging across the room, you are far less likely to pick it up when you wake up at night, or to be tempted to scroll mindlessly while you are supposed to relax and drift off to sleep.

Keep an eye on the blog in the coming weeks and months for more interesting info on the science of sleep. In the meantime, we invite you to visit us in-store to find out more about our Comfort Solutions Lab® and the pressure-point technology that allows us to make custom mattress recommendations for every customer that uses it.
