Bed King's Best Buy Guide: Wood or Metal Bases?

When you build a house you need good foundations, and the same goes for beds. A great Bed King mattress is going to need a great base to rest on. But with so many varieties and models available, how do you choose between a wooden and a metal bed base?

Wooden Bed Bases:

With looks ranging from classical to modern trendy, wooden beds certainly come in a beautiful variety of designs. Even better is the fact that thanks to the individual grain on the wood used in each base, no two beds will ever look the same.

One of the best benefits of buying a wooden base for your bed is the variety of textures and materials available. From rich and beautifully grained oak to sustainable and inexpensive pine, you are sure to find a wood that suits your needs perfectly.

Wood also has a warmth that makes it more suited to colder climates and bedrooms. It is difficult to imagine a metal kid’s bunk bed being as inviting as a wooden one! Despite their strength and stability, wooden beds just feel softer and friendlier than metal.

Wooden beds are also very popular as refurbishing options, upcycling or even making yourself if you have a workshop! Wooden beds also have less of an environmental impact than metal beds and are easier to recycle when you upgrade to a new one.

Increasingly popular are flat-pack beds that you assemble yourself. These beds often are made with a combination of solid wood and laminated wood. These bed bases are great due to their relative expense and ease of assembly. You will also be able to find countless varieties, shapes and designs for these bed bases. However, unless they are well made and designed, they will not have the same strength as a solid wood bed.

Wooden beds and their flat-pack cousins are also often complemented by material, leather or faux leather outers, headboards and other detailing. These upholstered bed frames are ideal for creating a truly cosy and intimate atmosphere in your bedroom.

However, wooden beds tend to be slightly more expensive than metal ones and may require annual treatments to preserve the wood.

Metal Bases:

From handmade antique beds to wrought iron beauties to complex modernist designs, metals have plenty of style and versatility as the range of options available are virtually endless.

Metal beds are also super strong, making them ideal options for bed that are going to see lots of traffic - such as hospitals, guest houses and backpackers. This strength also translates into long lasting bases that require relatively little maintenance aside from a fresh lick of paint every few years. Unlike wooden beds, they will never warp or be plagued by wood worms or other pests. If you are looking for a bed that will stand the test of time, then a metal frame is definitely the way to go.

Metal beds triumph over wooden beds with more or a variety of shapes, colours and styles, and are ideal for painting bright colours for children’s rooms.

Metal beds are also usually far more cost effective than wooden beds, as well as lighter.
