What on Earth is a Chronotype and How Does it Affect the Way I Sleep?

Did you know you have a chronotype? You totally do, and it actually has an impact on how well you sleep and when you get optimal rest. 

Psychologist and sleep specialist Dr Michael Breus has studied the sleep habits of the general population for many years and has come to the conclusion that there are four major chronotypes - AKA behavioural manifestations of underlying circadian rhythms. In short, your chronotype groups you along with other people in terms of when you are most likely to be awake and alert throughout the day. 

In fact, Dr Breus wrote a whole book about it, called The Power of When. In it, he shares the best time of the day for the four major chronotypes to do important things like having meals, scheduling meetings, etc. 

Here’s a look at the four major chronotypes: 


Bears have a sleep/wake cycle that follows the sun. They wake up fairly easily and go to sleep without too many hassles. As such, they are most productive before noon and tend to take a bit of an energy dip between 14:00 and 16:00 in the afternoon. Around 50% of the population fall into this category. 


Dolphins have a hard time with sleep and don't usually conform to any sort of schedule as such. They sleep very lightly and are sensitive to any disturbances in their environment. The one thing they have going for them is that their peak productive hours fall between 10:00 and 14:00, which is ideal in the working world. 


Lions rise with the sun. They have no problem getting up before dawn and will do their best work up until noon. They wind down at night at will normally fall asleep naturally by around 21:00 at the latest. 


Wolves thrive at night. They are most energetic if they are allowed to sleep in until noon and will then enjoy prime productivity until around 16:00, and get another jolt of energy at around 18:00. As such, they can work well quite late into the night.
