Moving Soon? Don't Panic Buy These 5 Things

July 21, 2020

Save your money when you move - don’t buy these 5 things!

Moving house is a big deal. In fact, next to divorce, it’s ranked as one of the most stressful things that can happen to a person. It’s actually no wonder that most people tend to get a little panicky and buy a bunch of stuff they don’t need when they pack up their life and head for greener pastures. However, at a time when the economy is a little shaky at best, it pays to save where you can.

Here are five things you should avoid panic-buying before your next move:

One-Size-Fits-All Curtains

This is a very common mistake new homeowners or renters tend to make. Buying one-size-fits-all curtains may seem like a tidy way to solve window-cover issues, but you could very well find that a certain room needs block-out fabric to keep out glaring street light at night, or that another space would do much better with a blind. Move in first - buy window coverings later.

Generic Mattresses

If you’re moving into a home with more bedrooms than you previously had, you may be tempted to get those spaces (e.g. spare rooms, or kids’ rooms) furnished straight off the bat. In cases like these, many people tend to buy generic bed frames and mattresses without really stopping to consider their options. Rather move in with what you have, and take some time to figure out what your bedding needs are before investing in new sleeping surfaces.

Cool New Decor Elements

When you move into a new space you may want to take the opportunity to give your space a fresh new vibe. We get that, and it’s a great idea! However, splurging on a variety of new rugs, scatter pillows, vases, etc. before you’ve had some time to get a feel for your new place is seldom a good choice. Find your feet first, and then give your imagination free reign.

Bathroom Accessories

Keeping your bathroom tidy is a great way to cut down on prep time in the morning. However, we highly recommend that you live with your new bathroom for a while before you go shopping for things like shower caddies, mirror cabinets etc. These things have to suit a room to be truly useful, and even if you take the necessary measurements beforehand, it’s best to wait a while before you add to cart.

Occasional Furniture

Likewise, occasional furniture items like coffee tables, pedestals, dressing tables, etc. are best purchased once you’ve gotten a feel for the flow of your new space so you can ensure that the investment is worth your while.

Holding on before you buy these five things is likely to save you a lot of money in the long run.
