The Different Types of Mattresses Explained

A good mattress can make all the difference between a good night’s sleep and a bad nights rest. That said, before you rush out to start shopping for a new mattress you will need to know some of the bedding basics. In fact, with some general information about the different types of mattresses available you should be able to make the right choice with the help of one of our BedKing store staff.

Innerspring Bed Mattresses 
The innerspring bed mattress is probably the most widely used (and purchased) mattress in South Africa. It uses tempered steel coils to provide support and is covered by layered types of different fabric and upholstery that provide insulation and cushioning between the body and the steel springs.

This type of mattress is well priced and is available in a range of comfort choices.

Foam Bed Mattresses
Solid foam bed mattresses offer an excellent range of sleeping choices. They can be made of a solid piece of foam or even several layers of different types of foam laminated together. There have also been extreme technological advancements in this area of bed technology over the past 30 years that have included the introduction of visco-elastic (“memory”) foams used to manufacture the well-known TEMPUR® Pressure-relieving material bed range. 

The types of mattresses range in price from the cheapest to the most expensive types of mattresses. They are also available in a range of bed comfort choices.

Airbed Mattresses
Airbed mattresses need no longer be bulky behemoths that are a complete eyesore. On the contrary, they are often designed to look like the familiar mattress/base bed combination and use an air-filled core that provides the body support function.
