Modern Bedroom Design Tips

Modern Bedroom Trends

The idea of Modernism in interior design is one that has been around for almost a hundred years, which might seem to be contradictory as we are talking about things being modern. But this movement, which originated at the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany, is one that has been so popular and relevant that it has adapted and evolved to be one of the strongest design themes today.

The philosophy behind the Modern movement is that function and form marry together to create a clean and seamless look and feel. There is a huge misconception around Modern interior design, and this is that it is cold and harsh. This definitely need not be the case. If well planned and conceptualised this style is calming and pure. It creates a sense of order and tranquility in a fast paced, chaotic world.

The key characteristics of Modern design are clean lines, few textures, as well as minimal clutter and needless decoration. There is a finely tuned balance between aesthetic and practicality. It is the perfect style for small spaces as the lack of ‘things’ in a space create a sense of more space. Natural materials and neutral colours, along with bold geometrics and asymmetrical layout are all cornerstones of the Modern look.

When adopting Modern interior design themes in a bedroom it is very important that the space is a haven of serenity but is not clinical and sterile. Here are some tips to create a Modern bedroom.

  • Colour me Modern - Natural neutrals are a firm favourite when choosing colours for a Modern bedroom. Greys, black, white and beiges are key colours. However, many interior designers who have adopted Modernism also use an accent colour. This is an important element, particularly in a bedroom as a splash of colour adds warmth and ambience.
  • Clean Lines - Unlike most other styles of interior design, the Modern look does not include curves or ornate elements. The lines are clean, smooth and there is very little additional detail. Moldings and trimmings are kept to a minimum if they are present at all, and the floor plan is open and free flowing.
  • Materials - Metal, stone, wood, glass. All these are elements that are strongly associated with Modern design. Wood is the perfect material as it is natural and adds warmth to any room, whether it’s wooden floors or a wooden bed frame.
  • Clear the Clutter - Nothing exists in a Modern space that does not have a function. There are no trinkets, unnecessary accessories or elements that don’t serve a purpose. Anything that breaks up the clean and clutter free environment of a Modern space simply does not belong there.
  • Lights Out - Natural light is always a winner when it comes to creating a clean, simple look. Big open spaces, wide windows and doors all allow for maximum light and a sense of space.

There is a school of thought that says that a bedroom designed using these principles of Modernism promotes a better night’s sleep. As a place of rest and sleep, it should be designed around the function which it performs. The idea of function and form is perfectly highlighted in a bedroom where each element in that room serves a purpose.
