Can your mattress be causing you back pain?

Back pain can be one of the most debilitating ailments to suffer from. Whether it is intermittent or ongoing, not only is it painful, but it can have huge impacts on daily life. Constant back pain can prevent you from carrying out even the most mundane tasks like carrying the groceries from the car, picking up the kids to hug them when you get home or bending down to get that pair of shoes out of the bottom of the cupboard, not to mention sport and exercise.

There are many causes of back pain. Carrying heavy loads, bending over to pick something up, bad posture, falling asleep on the couch. These are all possible culprits. Another big factor in back pain is mattress you’re sleeping on. Whether your mattress is the root cause of your back pain or not, it can certainly add to the pain you are suffering.

What SHOULD your mattress be doing for you?

The primary function of your mattress is that of support. Your mattress should hold your body in the correct posture without placing any pressure on your joints when you are reclined. While there is no right or wrong mattress, there are certain criteria that a mattress should meet in order to prevent back pain. First and foremost your mattress should provide optimal spinal alignment during sleep so that your back and neck are in the correct position, without straining.

How do you know whether it’s your mattress causing your back pain?

The best way to figure out if your mattress is the source of your back pain is a process of elimination. If you answer yes to the following questions, it might be time for a new mattress:

  • Do you wake up in pain, but it gradually disappears as you get up and stretch out?
  • Do you toss and turn in the night struggling to get comfortable?

What should you do if you are suffering from these symptoms?

  • First of all, if you are suffering from chronic back pain you should consult a doctor or chiropractor.
  • If you have established that it is indeed your mattress that is causing your back pain, it’s time to buy a new mattress. Mattresses should be replaced about every eight to ten years. After years and years of being slept on, they do eventually lose their supportive properties.
  • Also, look at the pillows you are sleeping on. It is vital that your neck is supported properly during sleep, otherwise no matter what you do your pain will keep coming back.

What mattress should you buy?

There is no hard and fast rule about what mattress is the best. We are all totally different and as such have different support requirements and different comfort levels. If you are suffering from back pain though, a soft mattress is probably not the best thing as you will simply sink into it without the necessary support. A mattress that is too firm will place added pressure on your joints. You should feel like you are floating on air when you lie down. You should feel totally supported and 100% comfortable no matter what position you lie in.
