Lack of Sleep Can Lead to Serious Stress

We've often spoken about how not getting enough sleep could affect your health and well being. However did you know that not getting enough sleep can also affect the people around you? We're sure that it has happened to you or someone you know - tempers fray quicker and people are more likely to snap at each other when they get too little sleep according to a poll by the National Sleep Foundation.

The poll found that adults in the US are getting an average of only 6.9 hours of sleep a night during the week, far less than the 8 hours that is recommended, and it appears that each year fewer and fewer people are getting a good night's rest. At the time of the study it was revealed that only 30% of adults were getting enough sleep and almost 40% claimed that they were so tired that it affected their daily lives.

Being tired at work or falling asleep during your job might not sound that bad- sure it is unproductive, but what is the worst that could happen? Well, several of the most severe disaster in the last hundred years have been linked to too little sleep: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, THe Challenger Explosion, American Airlines flight 1420 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. These disasters not only caused billions of dollars worth of damage and cost countless lives, but have also irreparably damaged the planet.

While most of us might not be working in a nuclear power station or captaining a oil tanker, sleepiness can still have a negative effect on our worklife. Those who get less than the recommended amount of sleep are more likely to get increasingly stressed, sad or angry and this emotional stress can lead people to get more impatient and more likely to make mistakes, snap at colleagues and even increase road rage leading to alteration and even fatal accidents. Find out more about the dangers of sleepy drivers here. Taking your stress out on your friends, family and coworkers is not only harmful to your health, but it can also irreparably damage your relationships and even cost you your job.

The solution? Destress with a good night's sleep! It is not only fantastic, but it is also really good for you!
