In humans, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland located in the center of the brain. The release of melatonin forms a part of the sleep regulation system and influences the sleep–wake cycle. It does this by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature, which helps to prepare the body for sleep.
