How to Choose the Right Mattress Companion (Your Pillow)!

January 11, 2016

How to choose the right pillow

Sleep enthusiasts should never underestimate the importance of their pillow in the sleep process. In fact, your pillow can directly affect just how much sleep you actually get. With the wrong pillow, your chances of waking up in the morning with neck, shoulder or back pain, or all three, are greater than you might think. Which doesn’t make for a good sleep experience, does it? We want to ensure that you have an exceptional sleep – every night – and by helping you in choosing the right mattress companion – your pillow – we are confident that you will achieve exactly that.

Choosing a pillow is about more than just a feeling, as in which one feels the softest (or in some cases the hardest). You need to consider a number of factors. The first step is to determine what your sleeping style is which will be the deciding factor in terms of the pillow’s thickness, as this determines just how much support is provided. Here are a few tips on how best to choose a pillow according to your sleeping style, if you:

  • sleep on your back – medium thickness pillows are best for this sleeping style. An orthopaedic memory foam pillow or high filled fibre pillow will be a good option for you.

  • sleep on your stomach – a softer pillow will ensure a more comfortable sleep if this is your sleeping style. You would be best advised to choose a low-fill synthetic pillow or even a soft fibre pillow.

  • sleep on your side – consider a pillow with medium thickness. Medium high density synthetic pillows, memory foam pillows and even some down pillows are ideal for side sleepers. When sleeping on your side, you should consider getting a second low density pillow. Place this pillow between your knees to align the body and reduce any potential pressure.

What other factors should affect what pillow you buy?

  • Allergies - If you suffer from allergies, consider only buying hypo-allergenic synthetic pillows.

  • Sleeping problems. If you suffer from any sleep issues such as snoring, neck and back pain, sleeplessness or even if you are pregnant, you should look into purchasing a pillow that is designed to alleviate the discomforts of the specific issue that affects you.
